 After
teaching tapestry for several years together at a Yaqui school,
Ann Keuper and Julie Hul wanted to create a place for weavers and
aspiring weavers to master their craft, learn beginning and advanced
weaving techniques and to share their passion of weaving with others.
After locating a beautiful old house in downtown Tucson and acquiring
6 floor looms and a tapestry loom, Desert Weaving Workshop opened
its doors for business in October, 2004. Their business philosopy
is quite simple, predicated on the following beliefs:
This may seem like an anomaly for many. We want to demystify the
process of weaving. We are doing that by offering weaving classes
where students can learn as much (or as little) about weaving as
they want. There will also be times when the looms will be pre-warped
and available for people to come and weave pre-planned projects
such as scarves, table runners and rugs.
Our culture is filled
with noise, computers, technology in many forms and complicated
life styles. Time feels like it zooms by at the speed of light.
Coming back to the looms, taking time to make an article, seeing
it develop over time, all these things seems to slow time, and give
some space for our selves. The process is like the expression, less
is more; when there is less technology, there is more discovery.
We are interested in
offering natural yarns and materials for sale including cottons,
linens, wools and silks. Naturals dyes (not in extract form) will
also be available through us as will our own line of naturally dyed
yarns.
Weaving
can be technical but it can also be creative. Weaving designs can
come from books and patterns but there are also many ways to be
creative and add ones personal touch. The workshop will be a place
to explore inner creativity through periodic study groups, and classes
in tapestry.
